Cape Cod Kayaking
Duck Creek, Wellfleet
Immerse yourself in Wellfleet History by touring through Duck Creek and along Indian Neck. Start out at Mayo Beach, Wellfleet’s most popular spot for sunbathing and swimming in the summer and head left past the pier. Be cautious of passing motor and sailboats as you make your way east. Head into Duck Creek and soon you’ll paddle past remnants of the Old Colony Railroad. The railroad, which brought people and goods from ‘off cape’ was closed in the 1920s and the portion between Dennis and Wellfleet (by Blackfish Creek) was made into the Cape Cod Rail (Bike) Trail. Paddle further into the creek and past under Uncle Tom’s Bridge, a famous landmark of the area. If the tide is high enough, you may be able to paddle up to Route 6 where the creek’s terminus is located. Head out the same way you went in and cross the harbor to a picturesque cove adjacent to Indian Creek. You may spot gulls circulating fishing vessels as they come in from the Cape Cod Bay. Look in the shallow waters below and you may spot the famous Wellfleet oysters. Or observe Great Blue Herons as they meander the shoreline hunting for fish to eat. Beach your kayak on the northern most portion of Indian Neck and have a pick-nick, or paddle back to Mayo Beach and go to one of many fine restaurants near Wellfleet Harbor such as the Pearl or the Bookstore.
